Mini Featurette for The Karate Kid
There has been a further mini featurette released for The Karate Kid;
Strangely this one makes me doubt this is going to be as good as I have hoped. The other trailers have been good and given me hope that this indeed is at least as good as the original but there is one scene in this that confirms my original hesitation about this remake (and let's not let words like 'homage' confuse the issues - this is a remake which follows the original script pretty closely).
For those of you who have not seen anything of the original I found this 4 min tribute to the original which covers enough of the original story for you to see A. how similar this remake is and B. the part I am now objecting to - so watch this first so you will understand what I am talking about:
Ok so now that you have seen just how closely the remake follows the plot outlines of the first one I want to draw your attention to one scene which is featured in the above featurette. In the original when Mr Miyagi (Pat Morita) steps in to defend Daniel (Ralph Macchio) from the bullies we see a few obvious differences to the new version - the bullies are much bigger and considerably (about 3 years) older than Daniel, next they are also considerably bigger and stronger than Mr Miyagi. In the new version the pint-sized bullies are the same age as Dre, and barely come up to Jackie's waist. It feels entirely inappropriate on several levels; namely age, size, and culture; for him to have an altercation with them.
In addition the clash between Mr Miyagi and the bullies and their teacher is on several levels - there is a feeling of shame - 'How did this old small Japanese guy defeat us'; racism - 'he is just Japanese'; age - 'he is old' and elitism - 'we are rich and superior, he is just the maintenance man'. I am not sure how all that depth can possibly be brought to a scene with Jackie Chan taking on pre-teen bullies who are the same culture as he is, and half his size. And it is this surprising depth of story and character that make the original the cult classic that it is.
The new version may have much higher production values - but will it live up to the original in depth, and thought-provoking ideals? I am doubting it more and more.

Old News Revisited
Ok I know Jackie's comments at the Bao Economic Forum last year are now such old news but I found this blog post this morning that enters into a very interesting discussion on the comments Jackie made and the reason I am posting the link to it is because it highlights some of the cultural differences between East and West, the differences in interpretation and meaning and value certain words have in different cultures and how that colours how certain words/phrases are interpreted. If this kind of stuff interests you this is definitely worth reading even if it is very old news.

Jackie retires from Action
Well he has been saying in Chinese media that AOG3: Chinese Zodiac / Twelve Zodiacs is going to be his last big action movie. So this isn't really NEW news.

Jackie Chan hangs up kung fu kicks after The Spy Next Door
The Hong Kong dynamo has revealed he's getting too old for the death-defying stunts that made his name.
Chan is in cinemas from today with The Spy Next Door, in which he plays a spy juggling babysitting duties with fighting terrorists.
In July, he'll fill the Mr Miyagi-style role in The Karate Kid. Then he's planning to go out in style with Asian action extravaganza Armour of God 3. He will star and direct.
"It'll probably be my last big action movie," Chan says. "I'm 55 - when I finish the movie I'll be 56 and when we release it I'll be 57. But I want to show the audience I can still do a lot of things."
Chan has suffered so many injuries in the course of his career, he's now in constant pain.
"A lot," he says with emphasis. "My shoulder, my arms . . ." He points at his groin: "Here. All the joints really hurt . . . you don't know! My back!"
Chan says his most painful stunt was simply falling the wrong way during the making of Police Story.
"I thought 'I'm dying' . . . I thought my backbone had gone through my heart," he says. "There was all this blood coming out. That hurt but I wasn't dying."

Jackie invests in Singapore Property
I hesitated about posting this because quite frankly it just really isn't that interesting, but some of you may find it interesting LOL so here it is.
Jackie and Emil invested in some apartments in Singapore. Jackie already owns a number of properties in Singapore. One thing you can't go wrong with is investing in property.

Jackie and Emil invested in some apartments in Singapore. Jackie already owns a number of properties in Singapore. One thing you can't go wrong with is investing in property.
HONG Kong movie superstar Jackie Chan and singer-songwriter Emil Chau have bought four apartments at the upmarket Centennia Suites worth over $10 million.
Chan is believed to have picked up three units making up an entire floor while Chau went for a three-bedroom apartment, all on the mid- to high floors of the 36-storey condominium on the former Kim Seng Plaza site, reported The Business Times on Thursday.
They visited the showflat last Friday when they were in town for Sunday's Thong Chai Charity Night.
The average price of a Centennia Suites unit is about $2,000 to $2,100 per square foot.
The 97-unit freehold condominium project, opposite Great World City and facing the Singapore River, is expected to be completed in 2013.

LIttle BIg Soldier Review
Well I watched LBS today. And I must admit I am always a little apprehensive watching a movie that has received a lot of praise in the media because somehow they never QUITE live up to expectations. However this was after all JACKIE CHAN and I even sat through Spy Next Door TWICE (just to make sure it was actually as bad as I thought it was the first time - but that is whole other story) because it was a Jackie movie. So it was with some anticipation, a little apprehension and a lot of expectation that I sat down this afternoon to watch it.
I need to watch it again because there are a lot of aspects to the movie that need a second or third or fourth viewing to fully get your teeth into all the depth of meaning - which quite frankly I just LOVE in a movie so this is a LITE review - which is kind of like LITE yoghurt - tastes OK but lacks substance - LOL.
So first impressions - oh what a delight an opening sequence that actually sets the tone for the rest of the movie and establishes the premise and background of the movie effortlessly. The opening scene is just as brilliant at setting the tone and characters of the two main protagonists as the title is at setting up the whole movie - the funny thing is that you don't appreciate just how incredibly well the essence both characters is encapsulated in that opening scene until after the movie (like now) and you take a moment to think about it.
There is wonderful balance between big and small in this movie. The entire movie moves effortlessly between a very large canvas (whether in landscape or storyline) and the very small. And I felt such joy watching the scenes that did portray the large landscape - one of the things I bemoaned the lack of in The Forbidden Kingdom was the lack of good utilization of the incredible scenery in which the film takes place and this movie more than makes up for any lack in TFK. Acadamy Award nominee for best cinematography Zhao Xiaoding proves his skill behind the camera in this movie. His technique/skill in filming small close almost intimate scenes is as good as his skill in filming the broad sweeping landscapes which are never allowed to overwhelm the characters.
As I said earlier the film is about the contrast between big and small, the contrast between the 'BIG' General and the 'small' soldier, between the 'BIG' concerns of the State and the 'small' concerns of ordinary citizens, between 'BIG' complex relationships to do with the accession of Kings and 'small' friendships. This is played out at all levels in the movie from sweeping landscapes to small intimate moments with a baby bird, from vast wars to a single small death, from affairs of State to the simple longing of one man. Ding Sheng has done an incredible job with this movie, controlling the finest detail and maintaining pace, balance, pathos, drama, comedy, in fact at all levels this is a finely crafted well-balanced movie that was simply a pleasure to watch. I do not feel at all like I am exaggerating if I say this is the best movie Jackie has made. Ever. It is all I would have hoped for if Jackie ever made a movie with Zhang Yimou while at the same time being entirely different.
Jackie was simply brilliant in this movie. The character he played fitted him like a glove. In a way all the things that Jackie, as a man, believes in were expressed in this movie. The depth of caring for the environment, his attitude towards life, and his desire for peace were all there, and while the man was 'small' he was somehow far greater than the General.
Lee Hom Wang unfortunately lived up to my expectations. I was somewhat underwhelmed by his performance in 'Lust, Caution' thinking that he brought a very limited range of emotion to the part and very expressionless face. Well he didn't bring any more expression or range to this part but as usual Jackie's casting is brilliant because the character of the General is somewhat expressionless and lacking in range so all in all it works incredibly well.
There is a lovely feel of genuine liking between Jackie and Lee Hom Wang which is transferred on-screen, even when there are moments of annoyance and dislike between them, you feel that the development of affection in their relationship is natural.
I am going to save a more indepth analysis of the movie for when I have had a chance to see it a few more times but for the moment I want to say that this movie gets a firm 10/10 from me. It was an emotional journey from beginning to end that swept me along with it, I am left WANTING to watch it again and the end had me in tears. It was GREAT! I can't wait to do it again tomorrow.

In both music categories she faces competition from Lady Gaga, whose single "Paparazzi" made the Favorite Song list, and Taylor Swift, whose track "You Belong with Me" is competing for the Favorite Song title. Black Eyed Peas are also up for two awards, Favorite Single for "I Gotta Feeling" and Favorite Group.

JC Auto Network Video Channel
Quite by chance I discovered JC Auto Network's video channel. I am sure that tucked away between all the car stuff there must a charity clip or three as I know they and their members have done quite a bit of charity work. (If you search the blog - I am too lazy to do it for you :) I know I have reported on some of it)
HERE is the link.

Thong Chai Charity - Revision
Well regardless - it is still an incredible amount considering that their goal was S$3.5 million.

Thong Chai Charity Night raised S$7.23m, not S$8.67m as announced
By Zhao Quanyin/Lynda Hong | Posted: 22 March 2010 2316 hrs
SINGAPORE : The amount raised at the end of the Thong Chai Charity Night telecast should be S$7.23 million and not S$8.67 million as announced.
The discrepancy, shown at the end of the telecast on Channel 8 on Sunday night, was due to a technical error.
The phone lines for donations are still open until March 31.
The show has also helped to raise the profile of Thong Chai Institution.
On Monday, some 1,000 people turned up to seek treatment, sharply higher than the usual 600.
Thong Chai had to stop registration at noon, but took down the contact numbers of those who were turned away for another appointment. - CNA/ms

More Jackie Chan Charity Involvement
Well I do seem to find some interesting stuff - again this is NOT what I was actually searching for but here are the results of my 'not searching' search this morning.
Fans of Jackie's music will be familiar with this song which was sung by Jackie, Alan Tam, Andy Lau and Jacky Cheung. A few may know it was for a charity.
So here is the rest of the story.

So here is the rest of the story.
The origin of the Lifeline Express theme song
‘The Longan Tree Back Home’
During my twelve years at Polygram Records, I had the
opportunity of working with most of the singers and
producers in Hong Kong, but none of those experiences was
more special and meaningful than the collaboration this time.
I have always been a supporter of the fund raising events and
promotion of Lifeline Express. I remember that I once followed
the Lifeline train all the way to Chongqing. The visiting group sang ‘A Spot Of Candlelight’ for the patients. The beautiful melody together with the unrehearsed singing won over the patients, this we could tell by their teeth-showing smiles and thunderous applause, which was believed to be a rare scene in such an impoverished village. Actually, they didn’t understand the lyrics of the song but could feel the warmth that came from the
melody and the singing. ‘A Spot Of Candlelight’ was a Cantopop song written twenty years ago, by Cheng Kok Kong (lyrics) and Chelsia Chan (melody). Even though Chelsia was only a teenage girl at that time, she was extremely talented. It was at that moment everyone’s happy faces told me our melodies could really bring comfort to those needy patients, while tailor-made lyrics could serve to awaken our sympathy.
Two years or so ago, when Chelsia accepted my invitation to write a song for Lifeline Express, I had faith that the song would become a national hit. The whole process of writing and production was far from simple and it took around two years to complete. ‘The Longan Tree Back Home’ was keenly supported and sung by four
Chinese superstars – Jackie Chan, Alan Tam, Jacky Cheung and Andy Lau. To do the recording, Jackie flew back from the US for a day; Jacky managed to squeeze time from the rehearsal of his musical “Snow Wolf Lake”. Alan flew to Beijing to join us in
between his China concert tour and Andy contacted us for arrangements immediately after his Hong Kong concert. This lineup was the first of its kind. Their voices could nourish the land as well as cheer the souls. Thank you.
A glittering longan represents a recovered eye. I hope you share this feeling when listening to the song.
Note: Lifeline Express is a charitable organisation set up in 1997. It is a purposely built four-compartment hospital train that travels to the remote, poverty-stricken, rural parts of China. Free
cataract operations are performed on the train, restoring sight and hope to needy patients. For more information, please visit www.lifelineexpress.org.hk

PROJECT VISION
A little about the organisation:
"Giving is a major blessing." Project Vision, endorsed by the Chinese Government, is a new sustainable medical relief project targeting at eliminating unnecessary blindness in China. We plan to establish 100 charity eye centers in poverty-stricken regions of China over a ten-year period (2006-2015). The first charity eye center was established in 2007 and a total of 5 centers are in operation at the moment.
"Give a man a fish, he eats for a day; teach a man to fish, he eats forever." The key feature of Project Vision is providing intensive training to the local medical team so as to build a self-sufficient "permanent medical team" in providing sustainable quality eye care services. For those who cannot afford to pay, we provide the sight-restoring surgery free. For those who can afford, we charge them at cost.
We start from cataract surgery but will expand to provide comprehensive eye services over a 5-year period. Each charity eye center will perform at least 1,000 cataract surgeries per year. When the plan is fully realized, from cataract surgery alone, Project Vision can help restore vision to 100,000 blind countrymen every year.
"We make a living by what we get, but a life by what we give." Let's join hands to make a difference for the blind, bring light to them and help them say goodbye to darkness!
Prof. Dennis Lam
Founder of the Project Vision
A Message from Jackie Chan,
Hi, everybody, I'm Jackie Chan, Ambassador for Project Vision.
China's very first Charity Eye Center is now open for service in Inner Mongolia! Project Vision plans to establish one hundred Charity Eye Centers in China over the next ten years. Following a model designed to promote self-sufficiency, an initial donation of equipment, and intensive training of local doctors in cataract surgical techniques, allows the establishment of a ''permanent medical team'' to aid the poor. By offering medical care at cost when the plan is fully realized these centers will provide 100,000 sight-saving cataract operations alone to poor patients. A one- time donation can provide sustainable development: ''Project Vision'' really deserves our support!

More on the General Yuefei TV Series
The Hollywood Reporter has this report:
This sounds like it could be well worth waiting for! I like the idea that Chinese made TV series could be released to a wider market. I have seen a few bits and pieces of other series on television in the local Chinese take-away and what I have seen (ok I didn't understand a word) looked really interesting (and yes I am pretty much a sucker for a good martial arts historical action drama movie/tv thingy). Maybe this will be the one to put Chinese TV series on the international map. And even if there isn't a international TV audience to actually broadcast the shows - there is always DVD!
Now if only they would release a dubbed / subtitled version of The Myth series which by all accounts was totally brilliant on DVD.
HONG KONG -- Jackie Chan and Stanley Tong will produce a 30-part television series about Yuefei, one of China's most heroic and controversial generals, now that they have secured long-sought Chinese government approval.
The JC Group China said today that it had begun early preproduction and casting for the $15 million Chinese-language project it plans to begin shooting in Beijing at the end of the year.
The series, "Yuefei," is about the general of the Southern Song Dynasty in the 12th century A.D., who helped defend central China against invaders, but eventually was imprisoned and executed by the high court at age 39. Yuefei's name was cleared posthumously and his story is told to Chinese children today to teach courage and tenacity.
For the last decade, attempts at getting the green light to dramatize the Yuefei story have foundered in the political bureaucracy of the lead broadcast regulator of China's one party government, the State Administration of Radio Film and Television.
The JC Group China will work from the 30 "Yuefei" episodes it controls that were written by the late Taiwanese writer and director Ding Shan Xi ("The Story of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen"), who died in November.
"Producing Yuefei, will fulfill at least two dreams," Jackie Chan said. "One, is that I always dreamt of playing Yuefei as an actor, I have a special feeling for this hero and it will be an honor to cast the role. The second, is a greater honor, to fulfill the dream of director Ding Shan Xi who wrote the series."
As producers, Chan and Tong said they hope to make something unlike anything ever produced for TV in Greater China. "We will spend about 10 times as much as the average costume, martial arts drama and rival production values of international series TV like 'Band of Brothers' or 'Rome'," Tong said.
Taipei-based international distribution veteran Steve Chicorel currently is campaigning to raise the money for the series outside of China. Chicorel, who sold the Chinese language film "Treasure Hunter" starring Jay Chou into France and Germany said he hopes to land distribution pre-sales to finance production.
Noting that "Shogun," the 1980s TV series about imperial Japan starring Richard Chamberlain, was the last popular Asia-based story in the West, Chicorel says the world is "now waking up to the fact that China and Chinese stories are important."
Dubbing 30 hours of Chinese television could be challenging, but Chan and Tong are counting on advances in technology since the early days of clumsy kung fu film dubbing.
"When done right, today's high tech ADR is seamless and whether German, French, Japanese, Korean, English or Hindi ... we're already in negotiations to make history and make 'Yuefei' the first Chinese, primetime series in these markets," Chicorel said.
Pray for me, brother - R A Rahman
I heard this song on the TV this morning and was very moved by it so I am sharing it with you.

In short:
Please follow the link to read more in detail about it.
New Delhi, 26 February,2007, (Asiantribune.com): Poverty has found a new singing voice -- the voice of India's music virtuoso A R Rahman, whose English single 'Pray For Me Brother' will be the UN's anthem for its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). One of the eight promises of MDG -- a program drawn up by world governments -- is to end poverty, hunger and disease by 2015.
In his song he asks: "Are you searching for a reason to be kind?"
Rahman says: "Poverty and hunger have no religion or gender and this song is to inspire people to do a little bit about the world. We all believe in a creator and even a prayer can change things," Rahman said at the launch of 'Pray For Me Brother' and its music video here today.
Explaining the reason for singing the song in English, Rahman said it was like a "statement from India". "If we have a message for the world, English is the best form of expression," he observed.
Music, he pointed out, had the power to change the lives of the people.
"Poverty is the root of all problems like disease and crime," he said.
'Pray For Me Brother' is the world's first music video shot in the mobile cinemascope format to enable suitable viewing by mobile customers.
Here is the full text of the song:
Pray For Me Brother
Composed by A.R.Rahman
Lyrics by Blaaze
Singers: A.R.Rahman and Blaaze
Pray for me brother
Pray for me brother
Pray for me sister
Are you searchin’….
Pray for me brother
Look-in’ for the answers To all the questions In my life
Will I be alone Will you be there By my side
Is it something he said Is it something he did
I wonder why He is searchin’ For the answers
To stay alive
Could you ever listen could you ever care
To speak your mind
Only for a minute For only one moment
In time
The joy is around us But show me the love
That we must find
Are you searchin’ For a reason to be kind, to be kind…
He said… Pray for me brother
Pray for me brother Pray for me sister
Pray for me brother Say
what you wanna say now
But keep your hearts open
Be what you wanna be now
Let’s heal the confusion
Pray for me brother
Don’t let me take When you don’t wanna give
Don’t be afraid Just let me live
Don’t let me take When you don’t wanna give
Don’t be afraid Say what you wanna say now
But keep your hearts open
Be what you wanna be now Let’s heal the confusion
Pray for me brother Pray for me brother
I’m ashamed ah, brother be dying of poverty
when he down on his knees its only then he prays
And it’s a shame ah, brother be dying of ignorance
cos the world is a trip and everybody’s a hypocrite
Need to stop ah , taking a look at the other
I’m not ashamed of poverty
need to be making his life better
So think about it, think about it once more
cos life is a blessing and it’s not justa show, ah
Round and round the world is spinning around
We need to be singing a prayer, we need to be singing it now
Round and round the world is turning around
We need to be singing a prayer, we need to be singing it now
Need to be feeling the power, need to be feeling the faith
We need to coming together just to win this race
Need to be feeling the power, need to be feeling the faith
We need to coming together just to win this race (twice)
Are you searching for a reason to be kind ?

In short:
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight international development goals that all 192 United Nations member states and at least 23 international organizations have agreed to achieve by the year 2015. They include reducing extreme poverty, reducing child mortality rates, fighting disease epidemics such as AIDS, and developing a global partnership for development.

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children... This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."
- Former U.S. President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, in a speech on April 16, 1953

The Institution's daily operating expenses are funded by the donations from the caring and generous public without any subsidies from the government. Every year, we need $3 million for our operations.
Having gone through 33 years of operations, Thong Chai Building needs to be renovated. At present, we provide TCM medical care to more than 500 patients daily. To cater for the increasing number of patients, our clinic has to be expanded and medical facilities and equipment need to be replaced and upgraded. Including annual medical fund, $6 million is needed for the project.
STCMI is organising a Thong Chai Charity Night to be held on 21 March 2010 at Mediacorp Auditorium. It will be telecast live on TV on Channel 8. Our aim is to raise fund of $3.5 million. During the show, our Charity Ambassador - international superstar Mr Jackie Chan, together with overseas and local star artistes and philanthropists will join us in this meaningful event to provide great and exciting performance.
We sincerely hope that you will be keen to support us in this event. Your kind and generous donation not only will benefit more than 500 patients daily, but it will also help tremendously Thong Chai's unwavering efforts in building Singapore towards a kind and philanthropic society.

A walk through time with Time
Ok so I posted the one below with Time Magazine but since posting that this article came out:
SOURCE: SOHU.COM

"Christian General" Feng Yu-hsiang
Following Wu Peifu, after Chiang Kai-shek, Feng Yuxiang became the "Time" on the cover of the third Chinese characters, at July 2, 1928.
He stood up and full 6 feet tall. He is not delicate yellow, but the tall, burly, bronzed skin, very kindly, "the Bible" Take in your hand or pocket of the devout Christian.
Yen Hsi-shan: "Shanxi king" of the ups and downs
In 1928, China's political arena, the Big Three Chiang Kai-shek, Feng Yu-hsiang, Yen Hsi-shan sitting together side by side, leaving the modern history of an important photo.
"Shanxi King" Yen Hsi-shan in 1930 China became the political arena a protagonist. May 19, 1930 issue of "Time", had chosen to Yen Hsi-shan as the Cover.
Chiang Kai-shek, "918" appear side by side the occasion
In 1931, "918 Incident" broke out, the Japanese war of aggression against China smoke suddenly filled the entire northeast. In this context, October 26, 1931 issue of "Time", select the Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-wife as the front cover of this magazine.
Before them, 10 12, Japan is responsible for dealing with the "918 Incident" the foreign minister to become the first front cover of the original coins.
Pu Yi, the cold bleak Emperor Dream
Early March 1934, in Changchun, northern China, there is a dream finally realized who revel in the excitement of being. He was the last emperor Pu Yi, March 5, Pu Yi appears in the "Time" cover:
"High degree of myopia, wearing spectacles, Pu Yi will become a new country - great Manchurian emperor. Last week, here called Manchukuo, two years ago was known as Manchuria." ( "Time", March 1934 5 days)
This year, the Government of the Republic of China Wang Ren premier and Foreign Minister, the annual session of the 52-year-old is old age. "Time" chose the cover of a portrait of Wang Ching-wei's recent drawings, revealing his face while competent, but it looked a bit tired. Zeng Yi rest is known for Wang Ching-wei, the legendary and courtesy no longer exist.
Interestingly, the "Time" in the description of Wang Jingwei's political experience, he was likened to the whale's beard - easy to bend, but also to push back.
Chiang Kai-shek from the punching to be boxing
January 24, 1936, Chiang Kai-shek as "Time" cover figure. However, this time, he was a group of people in one, reports the background of the new year in the Mongolian border outbreak of the Soviet Union-Japan military conflict, the participants also supported the Soviet Union, Mongolia, the support of Japan's "Manchukuo . "
As a result, this issue of "Time" cover, with such a succinct summary: "East Asia: the Soviet and Empire"; the same time, the cover picture appeared in several characters: the Soviet Union, Stalin, Emperor Hirohito of Japan, "Manchukuo "The Pu Yi, China's Chiang Kai-shek.
The following small print to the effect: she and China knows what it means to be patient. Literally taste rather pessimistic. Because at that time in the Pacific United States and Britain on the battlefield is not an advantage, the battlefields of Europe also showed a stalemate, in which case, China's fate does not optimistic, but the Japanese are likely to open up India-Myanmar, attack Yunnan, which the National Government the last stronghold is a serious threat. Kai-shek in the United States lobbying for greater support from the United States and China's understanding of the battlefield. Therefore, the atmosphere was very tense, China has only patience.
