When hostilities finally broke out in July 1920, Wu Peifu took the prominent role as commander-in-chief of the anti-Anhui army. However, Wu decided to execute a daring maneuver on the western end of the front by first outflanking enemy positions and then directly assaulting the enemy's headquarters position. Zhang Zuolin was forced to order a general retreat back towards Shanhaiguan, thereby ceding control of the capital to Wu and the Zhili clique.

Victorious, Cao Kun and Wu Peifu's Zhili clique nevertheless took control of a government whose control over the provinces had vastly deteriorated. Manchuria was now de-facto independent under Zhang Zuolin and the still formidable Fengtian clique, while the south was divided among myriad warlord armies, including remnants of the Anhui clique and Sun Yat-sen's Kuomingtang.

By this time Wu's prestige and fame had far surpassed that of his former mentor Cao Kun, nominally head of the Zhili clique. This strained their relationship, although it did not result in a fracture of the Zhili clique. Wu tried to restrain Cao when the latter began political machinations for the presidency but ultimately could not prevent Cao from toppling the cabinet and impeaching Li. Cao then spent several months campaigning for the presidency and even openly declared he would pay five thousand dollars to any parliamentarian who would cast for him. This caused national condemnation against the Zhili clique but did not prevent Cao from being elected in October 1923.

Boasting 17 screens, 3,500 seats total and occupying 15,000 square meters of the fifth and sixth floors of Le Mall, north of Wukesong Stadium, it takes the ticket as the largest movie theater in China.

Starting with the preview of Little Big Soldier, starring none other than Jackie Chan, the theater has been in trial operations up to now; the grand opening is scheduled for April, according to Yang Jie, the marketing assistant of Jackie Chan Yaolai International Cinema and Sparkle Roll Group Limited (based in Hong Kong). They chose the west-side location, Yang said, because "the company aims to offer more luxurious options in West Beijing and the place has convenient transportation, both subway and bus."

On March 6, to celebrate box office yields of 136 million yuan for his latest flick, Chan and his movie team came to the theater to show their gratitude to his fans and the media in a press event where Chan, appar-ently unfazed by the film's success, sought constructive feedback from the audience, saying, "For a long time, what I've heard is all praise and approval; I don't even see online criticism. It's pretty obvious upon arrival who's behind the theater's opening. Evidence of Chan is endemic, with "Jackie Chan Theater" etched thousands of times on just about ev-erything, Rush Hour posters on the walls and an Action Jackie mannequin dangling from the ceiling, perilously close to the blades of a replica helicopter.

After letting his audience wait for half an hour, Chan arrived on stage to cheers. "I'm happy to gather with the media and audience friends in our home," he enthused to the over-packed house.

These shows can never just get going, however. The crowd was first subjected to Vitas' "Opera 2," performed by Hei Ni of the CCTV "Star Boulevard" program. Cue the warm applause again.

This was followed by university student debate teams arguing about the conclusion of Chan's film and whether or not his character should have died or not – spoiler alert: for the first time in one of his film's, Chan's character does indeed die – with plenty of interjection from the man himself, who may have bitten off more than he could chew in this economy when he said, "All of you are very eloquent. If you graduate and need to find a job, I welcome all of you to work for my company." Then again, maybe he was talking about serving up popcorn and taking tickets in the theater.

Afterward, guests were treated to a viewing of Chan's 1989 film Miracle. Lu Shaoke, 27, a freelance film critic, told Lifestyle, "I was sitting in the 12th row, and I felt the effects were satisfactory. 我从写《生死不离》到《国家》，现在又写《世界》，被人们认为是一个年代的风向标。尽管这种评价对于我是一种压力，但想起自己的创作历程，确实这一切都来得太快。我是从2008年开始学写歌词的，第一首是游鸿明唱的《英雄》，讲的是奥运英雄阿赫瓦里的故事，正是这首歌让这位失败的英雄走进了国人心中。其实，当时为帮鸿明策划写一首奥运歌曲，本来是向他提供一个靶子，方便他的创作，结果鸿明就把我写的当歌词用了。第二首歌是莫文尉唱的，由小柯作曲《回家的路》，那年南方雪灾，很多人回家过年都被堵在路上了，我是有过这种经历的，把当时的感受写了下来，很纯朴。第三首歌是《站起来》，其实这也是为了帮人，当初王浙滨大姐找赵部长，想从奥运歌曲里面挑一首歌作为电影《一个人的奥林匹克》的主题歌，结果没有挑到合适的，在聊天过程中，他们发现我所说的，正式他们要的。浙滨大姐就鼓励我写，她把我关在她家的地下家庭影院房间里，一个电影片花，几张纸，一只笔，一瓶水。她开玩笑的说，写好了就放我走。两个小时后我交了作业，她和大编剧王兴东，还有作曲舒楠看后非常高兴，当时我真的不敢相信就这样通过了，还是电影主题歌！后来这首歌上了当年的春晚，并和《生死不离》同时获得了中宣部“五个一工程奖”，这是国家最高艺术奖。第四歌就是《生死不离》。那天我问助手，现在我已经写了多少歌了，他告诉我数量：“快100首了”。我自己都很吃惊，很多人都以为我只写像《国家》类似的歌，其实我也写了不少小情小爱的歌。隔几天，石头的专辑就要出来了，那里面的歌全是我写的，不过，和这位80后的音乐才子合作，反倒觉得自己实在太业余，太老了。反正我是业余的，无所谓，很多的时候，我就是这样安慰自己去写，管他什么，想怎样写就怎样写！在这样忙的日子里，偶尔地写些歌词，是想让自己安静一点，找寻一种平衡，让未来的工作充满热情。

说实在的，《世界》能成为世博志愿者主题歌，是我从来没有想到的，在发布会结束后，几位上海市的市领导把我叫到面前，表扬10多分钟，其中有个领导还说出了我写的好几首歌，看的出他们是真的很满意这首歌，这让小冬长长地叹了一口气，这位上海的团市委副书记经过几年的努力，终于完成任务，他很开心，也很感激我。其实是我应该感激他和他们的团队，他们能从成千上万的歌曲中能挑出我写的歌，让这样多的领导认可我，让百万志愿者同唱这首歌，是我人生最大的幸福。

我感谢何沐阳的音乐，感谢谭晶的本色演唱，还要感谢王晓峰，石头，他们都分别为此写过音乐。最应该感谢成龙大哥，如果没有他，就不可能有这首歌，正是他“讨债式”地逼我写歌，让我有写歌的动力和欲望。谢谢成龙大哥！今天下午是《世界》MV开机仪式，又是大腕云集，又陈凯歌导演，有贾樟柯等等，拭目以待吧！

Awards Ceremony for 2010 Asian Games

So the New Seven Little Fortunes will be singing again in Guangzhou on Friday (they sang at the first round of this competition as well) and the bit about using cell phones as electronic tickets is really interesting. I have a love for 'cool' uses of technology like this. I really liked Jackie's idea of making tickets a collector's item for his concerts so that people will take them home but this almost tops that having the added bonus of being paperless.

The 16th Asian Games, part of the worldwide Olympic movement and governed by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced that the 2nd Awards Ceremony for Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games Selected Songs will be held at Guangzhou Gymnasium,

Friday evening March 19 with 15 all-new Asian Games-themed songs to be presented.

The Asian Games are the second largest sports event in the world after the Summer Olympic Games.

Audience members will enter the Guangzhou Gymnasium venue with electronic tickets - mobile phone two-dimensional barcodes (instead of paper tickets) an effort to embrace the vision of a "low-carbon" Asian Games by China Mobile, a Prestige Partner of The 16th Asian Games.

A number of Asian superstars and newly emerged singers from the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan will featured, including Priscilla Chan (Chan Wai-han); Chao Chuan; Sha Baoliang; Jin Haixin; Wang Ziming; Elanne Kwong (Kwong Yeuk-Lam); He Jie; the New Seven Little Fortunes (Xin Qi Xiao Fu, Jackie Chan's disciples) and Square (a Hong Kong boy band).

Another highlight at this ceremony will be the launch of China Mobile's 12530 Asian Games Songs Zone, allowing users to upload, download and listen to Asian Games-themed songs, vote for their favourite songs and singers by text and multimedia messaging and share Asian Games-themed colour rings with friends.

The ceremony will also kick off the third round solicitation of Asian Games-themed songs. Organizers will invite first-class musicians to write songs and music for the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games then all the selected songs from the three rounds will be appraised by experts and the Theme Songs of the Asian Games will be unveiled, along with songs and music of other functions.

Terracotta Festival organisers break the news of their Opening Film on twitchfilm.net.


Jackie Chan’s latest film, ‘Little Big Soldier’, a period-action road-trip movie, will open the festival on 6th May 2010.

The film by Ding Sheng is set during the time when China wasn’t yet a country and was still comprised of seven warring states. Jackie Chan plays a reluctant conscript from one of these states and finds himself fortuitously capturing an enemy general, whom he planned to bring back to his home state to trade for discharge from army service.

Other highlights from the four- day festival include: Soi Cheang’s ‘Accident’ (which was In Competition at Venice Film Festival 2009), Japanese indie feature ‘Fish Story’ (can a punk rock song save the world from a meteorite?), and Korean gay-cake-store musical ‘Antique’ (an adaptation of the popular Japanese manga series Seiy? Kott? Y?gashite).

The festival will also include a documentary double-bill from doc-maker Yves Montmayeur: ‘In The Mood For Doyle’, which closely follows celebrated cinematographer Christopher Doyle, and ‘Yakuza Eiga’, an examination of the importance of Yakuza cinema, featuring many interviews from past and present Japanese actors and directors as well as real-life Yakuza.

Asian Games, 3-day Eventing and Jackie Chan

Firstly I must apologise for not updating the last few days but WOW what a slow news week! Usually I can find SOMETHING of interest to fill in the gaps when Jackie falls off the news map - but this week it's just been gossip, gossip and more gossip - which of course I refuse to perpetuate.

But at last something of interest has popped up! I came across this blog entry yesterday which of course piqued my interest with the connection to Jackie....(see the bit in bold)

It is really quite alarming how often I have to write these blogs! It only seems like yesterday that I wrote my first blog of the year but it's now two whole weeks and the season is right on top of me.

In the last two blogs I quickly ran over what's happened over the winter and the couple of small changes since Blenheim last year. Before Tweseldown today, I thought I'd go over the plans and aims for the season. I have already sat down with Jon Pitts, the physical and mental fitness guru, and planned to make plans!

In all seriousness, those that know me know that I can lose focus from time to time. These little sessions help me be far better prepared than I would be otherwise and so more competitive as a result. The secret is that you don't have to be a "professional" to benefit from help like this, whether it is mental or physical. It's is all about the edge.

Season's plans

So my season starts at Tweseldown. Chico, Maggie (Magenta) and Jeans will do the open intermediate and Fiddle the open novice. The first major competition of the year will be Badminton! This will be my first time I will be tackling the biggest, most prestigious and most pant-wetting competition in the world. The plan is to have a crack with both Maggie and Jeans. Each day we get closer we seem to get more and more volunteers to help on cross-country days, I think the last count was six! George Hills is officially the last!

Chico on the other hand will be saved for the World Equestrian Games in September, obviously another enormous date in the calendar! So he will compete at Saumur as his spring three-day (only a three-star in comparison to Badminton's four) then be wrapped up in cotton wool. I think it'll be interesting, as the season develops, to see whether it ends up being Chico or Jeans that I decide to take to the WEG. Jeans gave me the most incredible and awesome feeling at Blenheim (left) last year and he has really come into his own over the winter.

Finally, in November, there's yet another championships, the Asian Games. They will be held at my home city in China, Guang Zhou, and I was honoured to accept the role as Ambassador for the Games (along with the actor Jackie Chan). It is great to have a "new" sport representing the Chinese Asian Games. In fact this year will be the first time China will put forward an eventing team for a championship, a very significant moment indeed. It shows that China is ready for new things. We have always been so strong at table tennis and badminton for so long; people are looking for new sports to support.

New horse needed

There is, however, a small issue to overcome for me to compete. All of my horses are over qualified. Unfortunately, the Asian federation brought out a rule that not only are four- star horses ineligible to compete in a one-star (standard FEI rule) but three-star horses will also be over qualified. So the rush is on to find a suitable one- or two-star horse!

Loving the cardboard

Back at home, we have absolutely loved the recent spell of stunning weather. It is still very chilly in the morning, but it just so nice to have the sun on your face after such a disgusting winter. The horses have also been enjoying going out having stood in for almost three months (the picture at the top shows me bringing Chico in from the field). My groom Mark and I are both paranoid about putting the horses out in the snow and ice and if it wasn't icy it was so wet the fields trashed themselves by just looking at them!

I have to say, we have both been completely converted to a brand new type of bedding we haven't had the opportunity to use before. While moving, we experimented with different types and so my horses have been on everything in a short period. In the end, we've decided cardboard seems to cover all the bases. It's truly dust-free (rather than dust-extracted), incredibly absorbent, odourless and makes a damn comfortable and thick bed. In fact all the horses were lying down sleeping last week, something I have never seen in the past couple of years.

Ecobale is a small and friendly company based near Newmarket and I went up to the factory a couple of months ago and had a quick look around. Michael, who runs the company, explained to me that all the cardboard is recycled and stuff that would have been thrown out due to small defects that stop it being used for packaging. As well as the announcement of the Asian Games ambassador, a lot of exciting things are happening in China. Riding is becoming more and more popular — taking over from the ubiquitous golf as a topic of conversation. I am amazed every time I go back at the interest and the hype! As well as my H&H blog, I am writing a weekly blog in Chinese for QQ.com, the fifth largest website in the world! The documentary that we all worked very hard on for Chinese Central Television in 2009 has finally come out and a cover page for CCTV-5 magazine with TV star Sun Li (right). Let's just say it's a rare occasion when I have my eyebrows brushed for me!

Hopefully next week I will have some proper competition news!

Jackie Chan named Asian Games Promotion Ambassador

Famous international film star Jackie Chan has been named as a Promotion Ambassador for the 16 the Asian Games.

The announcement came at a press conference held by the Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (GAGOC) in Beijing and Mr Chan will help GAGOC promote the of the Games’ brand.

GAGOC Deputy Secretary General Gu Shiyang thanked Jackie Chan for his enthusiastic involvement in the Asian Games and said that Mr Chan’s appointment would help promote the Games’ Vision, passing on the friendship between people in Guangzhou and other parts of Asia and popularising the Games and China in Asia and around the world.

Mr Chan promised to spare no effort in promoting the Games, saying that the title of Asian Games Promotion Ambassador meant not only an honour but also a mission.

Last week Mr Chan was named the first Guangzhou Asian Games Singer.

Guangzhou, China, November 12 - The one-year countdown ceremony to the 16th Asian Games had a touch of showbiz glamour along with the sparkle and glitter of a lavish cultural performance at Guangzhou Gymnasium on Thursday evening.

World-famous pianist Richard Clayderman charmed the audience with "365 Blessings" as part of a performance that included folk song and dance numbers from Hong Kong, Syria, a Bollywood-style "Jai Ho" from India, plus Thailand, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Japan and Korea as well as the host city of the 2010 Asian Games.

When the performers gathered on stage for the grand finale, there was one last treat with the appearance of Jackie Chan, the king of kung fu cinema, to bring the evening to a spectacular and colourful conclusion.

At the start of the ceremony, OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said everyone visiting Guangzhou had witnessed the "excellent preparations" for the 2010 Asiad and added: "I am sure come November 2010 we will all witness an historical Asian Games, and I would like to thank the organisers for preparing the best environment for the success of our Games.

"I look forward to seeing you all in one year's time for the opening ceremony."

Liu Peng, Minister of the General Administration of Sport of China and President of the Chinese Olympic Committee, described it as a "grand ceremony" and said the Asian Games provided the youth of Asia with a stage to display their passion for sport and their determination.

"The Asian Games builds an important bridge between nations, and we hope by organising a brilliant Asian Games we will make a contribution to the Olympic Movement in Asia," said Mr Liu.

The one-year countdown clock to the opening ceremony on November 12, 2010, began at 8pm.

After the cultural performances, representatives of the 45 National Olympic Committees belonging to the Olympic Council of Asia went on stage to receive their official invitations to the Games from Sheikh Ahmad and from Mr Liu.

There was also a special video presentation on the "Road of Asia" promotional tour by land and sea through 37 countries and regions in the OCA, drawing attention to the 16th Asian Games.
