Yuen Woo Ping

Yuen Woo Ping has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at this years Fantastic Fest - a film festival held in Austin, Texas.

Hong Kong Legend Yuen Woo Ping’s ‘Fantastic’ Past, Future

After four decades choreographing and directing some of the best-known martial arts films in contemporary Hong Kong cinema, Yuen Woo Ping is making the first American film festival appearance of his career.

The legendary Hong Kong filmmaker, director of such genre classics as “Drunken Master” (1978) and “Iron Monkey” (1993) and action choreographer on international hits “The Matrix” (1999), “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000), “Kill Bill: Vol. 1 & 2″ (2003), and “Kung Fu Hustle” (2004), arrived this week in Austin, Texas to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award at the sixth annual Fantastic Fest.

In honor of Yuen’s award this year, two films screen Saturday during the genre-centric film festival, book-ending the influential director’s career: Yuen’s 1978 directorial debut “Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow,” starring a young Jackie Chan and Yuen’s own father Yuen Siu-tien, and his latest film, “True Legend,” featuring Vincent Zhao as the famed Drunken Fist master Beggar So/Su Can.

“True Legend,” recently acquired by newbie distributor Indomina Releasing, features previous Yuen collaborators Michelle Yeoh, Gordon Liu, and the late David Carradine and mixes Yuen’s signature action flair with CG environments and elements of street dance. Speakeasy spoke with Yuen about his film, inspirations, and what he learned from working closely with Quentin Tarantino and the Wachowski brothers.

What did you see in the epic story of Beggar So/Su Can that inspired you to make this film?

Bill Kong, the producer, approached me with the script and I thought the story structure was pretty good. I thought I could put some fight choreography in this movie to make it flow more. That’s why I chose this movie; it just depends on the script.

Your father, Yuen Siu-tien, was well known for portraying the character Beggar So in your 1978 film “Drunken Master;” Vincent Zhao plays a version of the same character in “True Legend.” To what extent did you mean to make “True Legend” in homage to your father’s legacy?

There is a connection; my father played Beggar So before and was actually very successful playing it. There was some idea that I wanted to continue his character myself, to keep him going.

In “True Legend” you make use of computer generated environments and effects. How much has your filmmaking style changed over the years, especially as technology advanced to allow use of digital elements?

I put a lot of new ideas into “True Legend.” But in this movie, computer graphics are still only support for the actual martial arts fight sequences, because you can never replace the true movement of actual actors fighting. Here specifically I put street dance elements into the choreography to make it more visually appealing; I always try to put new things into my movies, to give new things to the audience to enjoy.

Considering the many films you’ve either directed or choreographed, each with its own blend of different styles of martial arts, do you find yourself seeking new forms for each film?

All of my films have to be different and have different fighting styles and choreography. Otherwise the audiences wouldn’t watch them — they’d rather watch one movie if they all had the same style. So in “True Legend,” the reason I put the street dance, for example, into the choreography was that I thought there were some similarities between the street dance and Drunken Fist, that there was a possibility that I could combine the two together. Every film has to have some different style, some new element.

Your cast includes popular veteran actors who you’ve worked with before and are well known not only in martial arts cinema but internationally in film. How did Michelle Yeoh, Gordon Liu, and David Carradine come to join your cast?

I chose Michelle Yeoh and Gordon Liu because they already have an audience; they have reputations in martial arts film. The characters they play actually are pretty well suited to them; Michelle is a medicine expert and pretty good in martial arts, and Michelle is really good in martial arts so I asked her to play the role because it fit her. I knew David from “Kill Bill,” and in this movie we needed a Russian manager of the fighting club, so I thought David could manage this role. I was good friends with David and that’s why I asked him to play this character.

Having worked with him years ago, what is your best memory of working with David Carradine?

One interesting thing happened when I worked with David in a training session for “Kill Bill.” David thought he knew about martial arts, so he paid a little less attention to what I said. He’d say, “I know it, I know it!” while everyone else was putting a lot of effort into rehearsal. [Laughs] He thought he knew it so he’d just play around with the weapons. But he was a very decent person and we established a very good friendship during training and filming. I maintained relationships with all of those actors. So once I figured out that this role might be good for David, I just asked him to come over and play it.

Your films and your legacy have inspired a number of Western fans and filmmakers, some of whom you’ve collaborated with. What was your reaction to discovering that you’d influenced a new generation of filmmakers halfway around the world — some of whom, like Quentin Tarantino and the Wachowskis, you eventually collaborated with?

It’s a great thing, and it’s actually a mutual influence because I brought my movies to America and I’m also inspired by Western movies. It goes both ways. What I was most influenced by in working with the Wachowskis was their use of computer graphic technology. What they did in “The Matrix” matched my choreography perfectly to make the film work. From Tarantino, one thing I learned was how to make violence vicious. [Laughs] But I rarely use that.

SOURCE: SPEAK EASY

For their honoree of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Fantastic Fest chose to honor master martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, complete with a double feature of his latest film TRUE LEGEND – his first directorial effort in 14 years – and his directorial debut 1978′s SNAKE IN THE EAGLE’S SHADOW starring a then unknown, yet soon-to-be superstar Jackie Chan.

We were given the distinct privilege to speak with Mr. Woo-ping about his vast and impressive career boasting hundreds of films and including duties as an actor, producer, writer, director, assistant director along with being a stunt man, stunt coordinator, and fight choreographer on such films as DRUNKEN MASTER, KILL BILL: VOL. I & II, THE MATRIX TRILOGY, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, and KUNG-FU HUSTLE amongst countless other kung-fu and martial arts films. Not to mention his latest film, which marks his return to the director’s chair. As it has been said “If you’ve ever walked out of a movie theatre after watching a martial arts film and left your jaw on the floor, your eyes were probably dazzled by the fight choreography of filmmaker Yuen Woo-Ping.”

Read on for our interview with a true master, in which he discusses his regarded body of work.

Let us start very simply by talking about how you got your start with martial arts films.

I first started with my father doing martial arts and then, after doing that for about 30 years, I gradually changed over to being a martial arts director. Which is what I’m back to doing right now…directing my own films.

You’ve worked on hundreds upon hundreds of films including THE MATRIX trilogy, KILL BILL: VOL. I & II, and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON just to name a few. Is it even possible for you to pick a favorite film?

Yes, I very much liked my experience on CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON.

What are some of your favorite martial arts films, past or present, that you did not work on? Or are there even any martial arts films that exist without your work?

I very much enjoyed BOURNE IDENTITY and that whole series!

Your probably most well known for your work on THE MATRIX trilogy and KILL BILL: VOL. I & II. What fond memories do you have working on those films?

For those films, I very much appreciated my experience working with the actors. They put a lot of effort into the training because they were self-conscious and thought they weren’t doing well. They would even like to do the training on the weekends even though they didn’t have to. Especially Keanu Reeves. He only had to train five days a week but he asked to do more…even on Sundays. So we just kept on working on it. And I really appreciated his hard work.

How do you approach an actor, like Keanu Reeves for example, that has never had any formal fight training before working with you?

For actors like Keanu who don’t come from a martial arts background, I typically have to work with and train for about four months so that they are ready by the time they have to be on set.

You’ve jump started the career of Jackie Chan with your first film SNAKE IN THE EAGLE’S SHADOW, as well as having worked with some of the most well-known martial arts actors including Jet Li and Chow Yun-Fat. How do you approach working with different actors like this that have vastly different fighting styles?

For Jackie Chan, he has a really good foundation because he has a strong background in martial arts and had already won many championships. So he pretty much knew a lot about martial arts by the first time I had worked with him. So I just helped him develop his own style to go beyond what he already knew.

You’ve worn as many different hats as you can, having been an actor, a director, a producer, a writer, a second unit director, a fight choreographer, and a stunt man amongst other things. I’m actually surprised that you don’t have a few craft service credits to your name. What is your favorite role on a film set?

I prefer to do martial arts design because I get to do what I like. But I also prefer directing because then I’m in control. I get to chose the actors I want for a film. Because if I work with another director on a film, I have to follow that director’s opinion. It’s not my own creation…I pretty much like to create my own style of martial arts.

TRUE LEGEND marks your first directorial effort in more than a decade. What about this film made you want to get back in the director’s chair?

Producer Bill Kong gave me the script and after I read it I liked it right away and I thought I was well suited to directed it.

Now that you’ve returned to directing, do you have plans to direct another film in the near future?

If I have a good script, I would like to direct again soon. But right now I’m preparing two film projects so that’s what I have on hand. If I don’t find the right script, being a martial arts director would be fine!

Something tells me Mr. Woo-ping has a bright future ahead of him.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

From Wikipedia:

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, Zhongqiu Festival, or in Chinese, Zhongqiujie (traditional Chinese: 中秋節), or in Vietnamese "Tết Trung Thu", is a popular harvest festival celebrated by Chinese, and Vietnamese people, dating back over 3,000 years to moon worship in China's Shang Dynasty. It was first called Zhongqiu Jie (literally "Mid-Autumn Festival") in the Zhou Dynasty.[1] In Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines, it is also sometimes referred to as the Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, which is usually around late September or early October in the Gregorian calendar. It is a date that parallels the autumnal equinox of the solar calendar, when the moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest. The traditional food of this festival is the mooncake, of which there are many different varieties.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the few most important holidays in the Chinese calendar, the others being Chinese New Year and Winter Solstice, and is a legal holiday in several countries. Farmers celebrate the end of the summer harvesting season on this date. Traditionally on this day, Chinese family members and friends will gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, and eat moon cakes and pomelos under the moon together. Accompanying the celebration, there are additional cultural or regional customs, such as:

  • Putting pomelo rinds on one's head

  • Carrying brightly lit lanterns, lighting lanterns on towers, floating sky lanterns

  • Burning incense in reverence to deities including Chang'e (Chinese: 嫦娥; pinyin: Cháng'é)

  • Planting Mid-Autumn trees

  • Collecting dandelion leaves and distributing them evenly among family members

  • Fire Dragon Dances

In Taiwan, since the 1980s, barbecuing meat outdoors has become a widespread way to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Shops selling mooncakes before the festival often display pictures of Chang'e floating to the moon.

Houyi and Chang'e

Celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival is strongly associated with the legend of Houyi and Chang'e, the Moon Goddess of Immortality. Tradition places these two figures from Chinese mythology around 2170 BCE, during the reign of the legendary Emperor Yao, shortly after that of Huangdi. Unlike many lunar deities in other cultures who personify the moon, Chang'e simply lives on the moon but is not the moon per se.

There are many variants and adaptations of the legend of Chang'e that frequently contradict each other. However, most versions of the legend involve some variation of the following elements: Houyi, the Archer, an emperor, either benevolent or malevolent, and an elixir of life.

One version of the legend states that Houyi was an immortal and Chang'e was a beautiful young girl, working in the palace of the Jade Emperor (the Emperor of Heaven, 玉帝 pinyin:Yùdì) as an attendant to the Queen Mother of the West (the Jade Emperor's wife). Houyi aroused the jealousy of the other immortals, who then slandered him before the Jade Emperor. Houyi and his wife, Chang'e, were subsequently banished from heaven. They were forced to live on Earth. Houyi had to hunt to survive and became a skilled and famous archer.

At that time, there were ten suns, in the form of three-legged birds, residing in a mulberry tree in the eastern sea. Each day one of the sun birds would have to travel around the world on a carriage, driven by Xihe, the 'mother' of the suns. One day, all ten of the suns circled together, causing the Earth to burn. Emperor Yao, the Emperor of China, commanded Houyi to use his archery skill to shoot down all but one of the suns. Upon completion of his task, the Emperor rewarded Houyi with a pill that granted eternal life. Emperor Yao advised Houyi not to swallow the pill immediately but instead to prepare himself by praying and fasting for a year before taking it. Houyi took the pill home and hid it under a rafter. One day, Houyi was summoned away again by Emperor Yao. During her husband's absence, Chang'e, noticed a white beam of light beckoning from the rafters, and discovered the pill. Chang'e swallowed it and immediately found that she could fly. Houyi returned home, realizing what had happened he began to reprimand his wife. Chang'e escaped by flying out the window into the sky.

Houyi pursued her halfway across the heavens but was forced to return to Earth because of strong winds. Chang'e reached the moon, where she coughed up part of the pill. Chang'e commanded the hare that lived on the moon to make another pill. Chang'e would then be able to return to Earth and her husband.

The legend states that the hare is still pounding herbs, trying to make the pill. Houyi built himself a palace in the sun, representing "Yang" (the male principle), in contrast to Chang'e's home on the moon which represents "Yin" (the female principle). Once a year, on the fifteenth day of the full moon, Houyi visits his wife. That is the reason why the moon is very full and beautiful on that night.

This description appears in written form in two Western Han dynasty (206 BC-24 AD) collections; Shan Hai Jing, the Classic of the Mountains and Seas and Huainanzi, a philosophical classic.

Another version of the legend, similar to the one above, differs in saying that Chang'e swallowed the pill of immortality because Peng, one of Houyi's many apprentice archers, tried to force her to give the pill to him. Knowing that she could not fight off Peng, Chang'e had no choice but to swallow the pill herself.

Other versions say that Houyi and Chang'e were still immortals living in heaven at the time that Houyi killed nine of the suns. The sun birds were the sons of the Jade Emperor, who punished Houyi and Chang'e by forcing them to live on Earth as mortals. Seeing that Chang'e felt extremely miserable over her loss of immortality, Houyi decided to find the pill that would restore it. At the end of his quest, he met the Queen Mother of the West, who agreed to give him the pill, but warned him that each person would only need half a pill to regain immortality. Houyi brought the pill home and stored it in a case. He warned Chang'e not to open the case, and then left home for a while. Like Pandora in Greek mythology, Chang'e became curious. She opened up the case and found the pill, just as Houyi was returning home. Nervous that Houyi would catch her, discovering the contents of the case, she accidentally swallowed the entire pill, and started to float into the sky because of the overdose.

Some versions of the legend do not refer to Houyi or Chang'e as having previously been immortals and initially present them as mortals instead.

There are also versions of the story in which Houyi is rewarded for killing nine of the suns and saving the people by being made king. However, King Houyi became a despot. He gained the pill of immortality, either by stealing it from the Queen Mother of the West or by learning that he could make pills by grinding up the body of an adolescent boy every night for a hundred nights. Chang'e stole the pill and swallowed it herself, either to stop more boys being killed or to prevent her husband's tyrannical rule from lasting forever.

The Hare or The Jade Rabbit

According to tradition, the Jade Rabbit pounds medicine, together with the lady, Chang'e, for the gods. Others say that the Jade Rabbit is a shape, assumed by Chang'e herself. The dark areas to the top of the full moon may be construed as the figure of a rabbit. The animal's ears point to the upper right, while at the left are two large circular areas, representing its head and body.[6]

In this legend, three fairy sages transformed themselves into pitiful old men, and begged for food from a fox, a monkey, and a hare. The fox and the monkey both had food to give to the old men, but the hare, empty-handed, jumped into a blazing fire to offer his own flesh instead. The sages were so touched by the hare's sacrifice and act of kindness that they let him live in the Moon Palace, where he became the "Jade Rabbit".

Cultural diplomacy best wins hearts, minds

Earlier this year at the National People's Congress, Premier Wen Jiabao stated in his government work report that China will attach more importance to cultural development to enhance the international influence of Chinese culture.

This is just the latest confirmation that China recognizes that it has to enhance its global image by the exercise of soft power.

Soft power is what a nation can exercise to make itself loved, as opposed to hard power, which is about making itself feared, think military. The concept was first developed in 1990 by Joseph Nye, a former Dean of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, who I had the pleasure of meeting a few years ago.

Reports in the Chinese press suggest that a major salvo in China's soft power initiative is about to be launched at any moment. China has asked a group of 50 Chinese opinion leaders including the omnipresent Yao Ming, Lang Lang and Jackie Chan, to make 30-second image commercials, together with one 15-minute commercial to, according to the State Council, present an image of "prosperity, democracy, openness, peace and harmony" as a counterweight to neutralize negative stereotypes coming from foreign media.

These may be good to show in embassy waiting rooms and at public events, but as a media campaign they will have about the same effect as the recent "Made in China" campaign, which barely made a ripple worldwide. In any case, they are worth a try.

I also think that the massive spending in upgrading CCTV News and CRI will bear little fruit as most of the public see them as sources of propaganda, rather than information. Maybe 10 years ago this might have been an investment well made but in today's world of unlimited Internet, there are so many other news sources that are more trusted. Xinhua News may however have a better shot at being successful. With their vast resources, they have the possibility of being as effective as, say, Russia Today or Al-Jazeera if they are seen as reporting the news objectively.

I believe that cultural diplomacy will best win hearts and minds. Take the Terracotta Warriors of Xi'an who are serving China better today as softpower ambassadors than they ever served the first emperor of China,Qin Shihuang, as hard power soldiers in the afterlife 2,300 years ago. They have conquered record-breaking crowds and created positive buzz everywhere they have marched.

In 2007, they caused a sensation at the British Museum. Despite staying open until almost midnight, the museum had to lock its gates and turn away overflow crowds. When the warriors returned home the following spring, they had drawn a record 850,000 visitors.

I remember going to the National Gallery of Art in 1976 in Washington and seeing the exhibition Treasures of Tutankhamun which amassed an audience of 836,000 people over 117 days. This phenomenon was nothing new. When the King Tut relics went on display in the 1920s, they caused a sensation and even upended the fashion world in Europe and North America.

Another tool that will pay huge dividends are Chinese film productions and co-productions.

Hollywood loves one thing: other people's money. And in China there is lots of it. In turn Hollywood can share its century of successful production, marketing and distribution.

Other elements of cultural diplomacy that I believe will be successful are the ever-growing number of Confucius Institutes worldwide. Care, however, must be exercised in academic settings where some may charge that they are propaganda sources, not learning tools.

Also, audiences love live performances, including superstars like Lang Lang. This includes wushu from the Shaolin Temple and elsewhere, Chinese acrobats, circus performers and gymnasts. I believe audiences would thrill to master classes, lessons and just meeting these ambassadors of good will if they could be scheduled accordingly.

Finally, though it's decidedly low cost and low tech, good old fashioned pen pals via Internet or snail mail can make a huge impact. I remember the excitement of having a pen pal in Sweden and in the Congo, as well as the frustration of waiting months for a reply.

Now replies travel at the speed of light.

Feng Yu Tong Zhou

This is the song Jackie sang at the Opening Ceremony of Gansu Week at the World Expo in Shanghai. It was written by Wang Jingpiu specifically for the victims of the Zhouqu mudslide victims. Very different style of song from Jackie's recent songs - but as usual lovely. Enjoy.

Jackie Sings Măn Jīang Hóng

Words:

靖康恥,猶未雪;

Nù fà chōng guān, píng lán chù, xiāo xiāo yǔ xiè.

Tái wàng yǎn, yǎng Tiān cháng xiào, zhuàng huái jì liè.

Sān shì gōng míng chén yǔ tǔ, bà qīan lǐ lù yún hé yuè.

Mò děng xián bò liǎo shào nián toú, kōng bēi qiè.

Jīng kāng chǐ, yóu wèi xuè;

Chén zǐ hèn, hé shí miè?

Jià cháng jū tà pò Hèlán shān què!

Zhuàng zhì jī cān Hú lǔ rù, xiào tán kè yǐn Xiōng nú xuè.

Daì cóng tóu shōu shì jiù shān hé, cháo Tiān què.

My wrath bristles through my helmet, the rain stops as I stand by the rain;

I look up towards the sky and let loose a passionate roar.

At age thirty my deeds are nothing but dust, my journey has taken me over eight thousand li

So do not sit by idly, for young men will grow old in regret.

The Humiliation of Jing Kang still lingers,

When will the pain of his subjects ever end?

Let us ride our chariots through the Helan Pass,

There we shall feast and drink barbarian flesh and blood.

Let us begin anew to recover our old empire, before paying tribute to the Emperor.

Gansu Expo Week

Gansu Province, which was hit by a devastating mudslide early last month, began its culture week at the Expo yesterday with songs of thanksgiving, including one from kung fu star Jackie Chan especially written after the disaster to encourage survivors to be brave.

"People of the whole country will stand together with you and you must be able to stick out through the disaster," Chan said at the Baosteel Stage. He said he would be visiting Zhouqu County, site of the mudslide, soon.

About 20 rescue workers, including Armed Police officers and medical staff, and people who had donated money to help, were invited to watch the opening ceremony.

Eight Gansu children, some of whose parents had died in the disaster, sang on the stage to the warmest of applause.

"Children from Zhouqu will not cry no matter what disaster happened to us," they sang.

The province is giving away 300,000 tickets to its tourist attractions with a total value of 10 million yuan (US$1.48 million) to Expo visitors in gratitude for the help that came from around the world after the disaster.

The tickets offer free entry to 37 tourist spots in the province and will be available at the Baosteel Stage and the Gansu Pavilion until Wednesday.

A documentary about the latest conditions in the province and rescue work was screened at the pavilion yesterday and it is to be shown repeatedly from now on.

The culture week features many of the province's traditional folk arts including the making of luminous wine cups.

Artist Jia Sengdong will be polishing a type of special stone found in Tianshui City into cups so thin as to be transparent - the legendary luminous cup mentioned in China's ancient poems and historic books.

Song and dance performances will take place at Celebration Square in the Pudong Expo site at 3pm every day. A drama featuring folk dances and songs, "The Fantastic Deer of Nine Colors," will be staged at the Baosteel stage at 11:30am, 1pm and 4pm daily, followed by a parade at 5pm.

The flood-triggered mudslide in Zhouqu County on August 8 killed more than 1,400 people, and more than 300 are still missing.

Through thick and thin

Author: Wang Ping jiu

Composer: Chang Shi Lei

Singer: Jackie Chan

When there is wind, let's block it together

When there is rain, let's shoulder it together

In the middle of the wind and rain, we are the ocean

Hope always passes through the big waves

When there is trouble, we take it together

When there is suffering, we share it

In the middle of a crisis, we are strength

Stand tall with the light of life courageously

Through thick and thin, the heart is the oars of love

With you and me, we flow against the currents

The more wind and rain there is, the more we want to fly

The wind and rain is tomorrow's sunlight

When there is wind, let's block it together

When there is rain, let's shoulder it together

In the middle of the wind and rain, we are the ocean

Hope always passes through the big waves

When there is trouble, we take it together

When there is suffering, we share it

In the middle of a crisis, we are strength

Stand tall with the light of life courageously

Through thick and thin, love is the heart's distance

In the love web of the world, there is you and me

The more we near the end, the more we have to be strong

Stand up because belief is shining bright

When there is wind, let's block it together

When there is rain, let's shoulder it together

In the middle of the wind and rain, we are the ocean

Hope always passes through the big waves

When there is trouble, we take it together

When there is suffering, we share it

In the middle of a crisis, we are strength

Stand tall with the light of life courageously

Through thick and thin

Through thick and thin

When there is wind, let's block it together

When there is rain, let's shoulder it together

In the middle of the wind and rain, we are the ocean

Hope always passes through the big waves

When there is trouble, we take it together

When there is suffering, we share it

In the middle of a crisis, we are strength

Stand tall with the light of life courageously
